Last Post of 2013 :)

Another new year. Damn I feel old :( I can't believe I'm going to be 24 this year! So old....
I guess it's time for a sappy post.
This year has been crazy and blessed in many many ways. I could probably spend like an hour writing a post about all the shit and good stuff that's happened this year. Like literally, now that I think about it, this year has been a TOTAL blur. Mostly because med school is so fast paced and each day goes by in a blur. I guess that's something to work towards in the future -- savoring each day and each moment because it will never come again.
I thank God for helping my family get through all the bad moments this year. This year has put a toll on our family, challenged all four of us, and has tested our love. And I'm happy we've come out of this with some damage, but with much more cohesion and togetherness than I have seen in years.
And of course, now I'm 3/8 of a doctor! I feel like I know nothing, but I think I've come out with a lot more patience, determination, and confidence. Also, I feel like for the first time I've made some real relationships that will last me a lifetime.
Of course, I have much more to improve on this upcoming year. For one, now that I'm 24 it really really hurts me that I've never had a real relationship....never had a steady boyfriend. That's something I really want to fix, but first I have to change the way I look at myself. I have a horrible self-image and that's something I want to work really hard to fix this upcoming year. I have all the tools, I just have to put it to use and dodge all the stress-induced pressures to wreck my diet that spring up every other day in med school. Ahh but that could comprise a whole post on its own, so that's all I'll see about that in this post.
But yeah, I'm hoping 2014 is a better year than this year in many ways, but I hope our family is blessed with good health once again this year. There have been a lot of deaths in my family recently, with the most shocking being my cousin Deepak's untimely death. It seems SO unreal to me still and I still sometimes think it was a bad dream. He was such a young, handsome man full of promise, potential, and unfulfilled dreams. I'm hoping that wherever he is, he is resting in peace. Like I said, it's still a HUGE shock for me and the rest of my family and may God support his close family in this rough time. There have also been other deaths in more distant family and my God bless their souls as well. I'm so scared for my health and my parent's health...I'm hoping God once again graces us with good health and prosperity as he has this year. That's my biggest prayer for this upcoming year...I just want God to protect my family and bless them with good health and wealth.
I think that's about it for my post! Here's to a great 2013 and a (hopefully) better 2014! I'm hoping I grow in many ways this year, and I really really really hope I can shrink my waistline and finally have the dream body I've wanted for the past 15 years. Seriously, it's time to stop cycle-dieting and shed this weight once and for all!

No-buy January/February!

HOLY MOLY. Signed on to my PNC virtual wallet this morning to pay my credit card bill for this month and I literally freaked out for a second that my credit card number had been stolen! After checking my purchase history, I was kinda horrified to know that my number had infact not been stolen (whew!), but rather that I had spent $500 within the past like 3 weeks! Yeah....$500 in three weeks. A new all time low for me.
I think I let all the Christmas stress, family stress, exam stress, end of semester stress, and the impending Step1/clerkships stress finally get the best of me. I guess there are worse ways to handle stress than shopping and binge eating, but I think this is a big fat wakeup call for me to mend my ways a little bit this winter season (or as I call it the blah season).
Sooooo I've made a pact to not buy ANYTHING beauty or fashion related in the months of January and February! Yesss, no new makeup, clothes, accessories, bath products, crafting supplies, even no fancy baking ingredients. The only exception I think I'll be making is buying the oh-so-adorable new Too Faced Sweethearts Blush that I've been eyeing up for my annual being-single-on-Valentine's-Day treat, but besides that noooo more beauty binges the rest of these two months! Of course I'll shell out money for food and hygiene products like shampoo or deodorant, but nothing else. Also, as part of my growing list of New Year's resolutions, I'm going to be restricting my eating out days to once a week. Hopefully this will make both my wallet and arteries happy :) although I'm afraid that my new pact of no more refined sugars or processed foods is gonna hit my wallet pretty hard too..but hey hopefully it's gonna pay off this bikini season! :)

New daily routine!

Figured it was time to organize my life a little bit more and chalk out a typical day kind of routine.
By no means will I be following this every single day of the week, but it's gonna allow for some structuring of my work week, typically Mondays-Fridays. Right now I wake up whenever, study whenever I'm not lazy and hope for the best. Not anymore! Time for some serious schedule re-organization!

6:00-6:30 -- wake up, take medication, brew coffee, check emails, look at daily schedule
6:30-7:00 -- eat light breakfast, check emails, look at daily schedule
7:00-8:00 -- exercise
8:00-9:00 -- shower, get ready
9:00-12:00 -- class/study, snack
12:00-1:00 -- light lunch
1:00-5:00 -- class/study, snack
5:00-6:00 -- light dinner
6:00-9:00 -- class/study, snack

  2. Capturing every get-together with friends and family in a photo
  3. Checking in with old friends once a month month (text, Facebook)
  4. Cutting out processed foods and refined sugars
  5. Sleeping 7+ hours a night

Nighttime Routine

So sad that Christmas is done for another 364 days :(
I guess I should probably post about my New Year's resolutions, seeing that there is a long laundry list of them and hopefully one of them will come to fruition this year. I'm starting my resolutions now, a couple days before January 1st to really 'beat out the crowd' ha. But all those I'll write in another post. This one I wanna focus on a much-needed list of nighttime routine things I want to do every night. I'm hoping this list kinda serves as a reminder so I don't forget something or anything.

  1. Remove all makeup with Aveeno Ultra-Calming Makeup Wipes until wipe comes out clean
  2. Wash face with 1-2 pumps of Clinique Acne Solutions Foaming Wash. Rub into skin throughout
  3. Use a cottonball and Clinique Acne Solutions Toner to wipe face. Repeat until clean
  4. Apply Aveeno Smart Essentials Night Cream all over face. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  5. Dip one end of Q-tip with toner and rub over any acne. Once dry, put some Clean & Clear Benzoyl Peroxide on the other end and rub onto acne
  6. Apply eye cream all over undereye and lid area
  7. Brush teeth with Crest 3D Whitening Toothpaste
  8. Floss teeth, followed up with Crest 3D Whitening Mouthwash
  9. Place hair in a loose bun before sleeping

First day back to wearing contacts!

Over the past month, I've been wearing my glasses everyday since my cornea had some inflammation going on. I absolutely haaaate wearing glasses because they look super clunky on my face. But the worst part about it was that I wasn't allowed to wear any eye makeup since bits of shadow/mascara could get into my eye, making the inflammation worse. Even a little undereye concealer had my eye tearing up...sooo yeah pretty bad. But today, I'm going back to wearing contacts!!! Sooo excited, and definitely going to try putting on a little bit of eye makeup today. Nothing too dramatic, but maybe a little gold shadow to brighten up those eyes.

I have to go to clinic this afternoon...not really looking forward to it since I'm so behind in class and it's freezing as hell outside, but since my CSA exam is coming up in two weeks, the practice will be good. As always, I didn't really practice my physical exam during Thanksgiving break, but hopefully this session will elucidate which parts of the exam I'm most shaky on and I can practice next Sunday.

On the flip side, I'm somewhat excited to get back into the groove of school since it's gonna give me something to focus on other than family drama that I've been dealing with for the past few months. Also, it's Step 1 studying season soooo...busy busy busy times coming up! Break out the fleece pants and baggy sweaters!

Spring 2014 Beauty Wish List!

Yeah yeah I know, it's not even Christmas yet but I couldn't help but get excited by all the cute stuff out for Spring 2014! I know Revlon's put out sneak peaks of some of their spring collection in certain stores and Tarte has these super cute butters in floral tubes that would be perfect in my bag for the spring season. As a girl who sorts her makeup collection by season, March is usually the time I swap out my winter reds and plums for pinks. This spring, I'm probably going to have to discard a lot of my products since they'll be hitting the 2 year mark, which is about the expiration date of most makeup in my mind. (click on the pictures for the links/credit)

Benefit Ultra Plush Lip Gloss in Coralista
My all time favorite lipgloss brand and color! It's legit the best MLBB gloss I've ever found and it smells, tastes, feels so amazing on my lips. Can't wait to be wearing this peachy-pink gloss again this spring :)

Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream
I think it's about time I start wearing a CC cream, especially since I'll be hitting up the wards soon where my patchy concealer coverage is going to look sloppy. Clinique is one of my trusted skincare brands since they have mild ingredients, are good for sensitive skin, and their products are oil-free. I've also heard this product has good coverage, so I can't wait to try it out!

Clinique Long Last Glosswear in Clearly Pink
Okay so I got reaaally pumped for these a while back as I was browsing lip glosses on Sephora because I saw that these had SPF15 in them, which would make them perfect for the sunnier spring-summer days. However, these no longer are labeled as having SPF in them, but it's supposedly because of changed FDA rules? Whatever the case is, I'll probably be picking up this shade this spring because it's such a beautiful clear, pinky gloss and it has some sun-protecting ingredients.

CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Glossy Nail Color in Peaches & Cream
My faavvvvorite current nail formulation, and it looks like a beautiful peachy color for the spring season.

Lavanila Body Butter in Vanilla Lavender
I got the Pure Vanilla scent this winter and I absolutely fell in loveeee. Sometimes in the humid spring weather, my skin gets a little dry and this scent would be a perrrfect light, flowery smell.

Maybelline Color Elixir Lip Color in Nude Illusion and Rose Redefined

Nyx Butter Gloss in Peach Cobbler
I'm not sure which shade I wanna try in this, but I've heard SOOO much about this product lately that I'm definitely going to try some shade this spring. I love glosses and I love butters so the two together should be a megahit!

Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cashmere
Powder shadows on my inner corner just look really chalky and fake on me. I think this warm champagne creamy pencil would be amazing to brighten up my eyes, especially to fake a well-rested face in the spring and summer.

Revlon Colorburst Lacquer Balm in Ingenue
I'm actually really really really excited to try these lacquer balms! They have such a nice color range that I didn't which ones to get and which ones to skip. I think nude color would look great with a nice tan and light makeup.

Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Creme Brulee and Peach Parfait
I honestly love each and every one of these lip butters. I don't think there could be a warm-toned color that I didn't want (okay maybe except the one orange shade haha). These formulations are just so moisturizing for chapped lips like mine and they are soooo pigmented! These shades are really nice for the upcoming spring and summer seasons.

Revlon Colorburst Matte Elusive
So bright and pretty for the spring! And lasts a really long time since it's a matte balm.

Stila Portrait of a Perfect Blush Palette
I was about to purchase some pinky shades of Tarte blushes, but then I saw this and fell in love. It has such pretty pink shades and some brown bronze/blushes for all year round, and has really good mineral ingredients too!

Tarte Amazonian Butter Lipstick in Tulip
Lets be honest. The packaging is so beautiful!! No swatches available online, but I'm sure it's going to be a beautiful rose-pink color, and all butters are good products in my opinion.

Tarte Cheek Stain in Tipsy
I recently received a sample of the cheek stain in Flushed, and I fell in love! It really adds a natural looking glow to my skin rather than looking like I dabbed on powder all over my face, especially with my heavy hand. I think this shade would be perfect for the spring, so I'm hoping this product isn't discontinued and will be back in stock at Sephora soon!

Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette
There could not a prettier palette for the springtime than this. It has such a nice variety of pinks and plums that are going to look absolutely amaaaazing on my warm skintone. There's also some other rose gold and bronzish shades that will look soo beautiful. Can't wait till this palette hits Sephora!

Favorite Beauty Products of 2013

Hey all! So as my first post on this blog, I thought I would post about some of my favorite beauty products this past year! It's been a year of discoveries for me as far as products go. I reeeally expanded my makeup collection (and damaged my wallet in the process), but I think I've made some good purchases this year and hopefully keep making some more in the upcoming year!

Favorite Moisturizer -- I've been using the Aveeno Smart Essentials Facial Moisturizer with SPF 30. It smells amazing, softens my skin, feels very light on the skin, isn't as greasy as their other facial moisturizers, and has antioxidants. Plus, I haven't gotten any brown spots since I've switched to this product. So clearly, it's doing its job! For my nighttime moisturizer, I use the Aveeno Smart Essentials Nighttime Moisturizer. Super hydrating and not greasy at all.

Favorite Primer -- I don't really use facial primer, but as far as my favorite eyeshadow primer goes, I'd have to say the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion. It's a cult favorite for a good reason! I have oily eyelids and shadows don't really tend to stick on me, but this primer makes sure that my eyeshadow lasts throughout most of the day and doesn't crease through important meetings and stuff.

Favorite Concealer -- BareMinerals Correcting Concealer in Tan 2. I like this because it has really good coverage, good ingredients, matches my winter skin tone pretty closely, has SPF 20, and is a 'correcting' product (I have the nice feeling that it's actually doing something useful; whether or not that is actually the case has yet to be determined...). For a heavier or more precise coverage concealer, I like the Milani Secret Cover Concealer Stick in Medium.

Favorite Highlight -- I'm not a huge fan of highlighting powders, but if I had to pick one I'd say Benefit Watt's Up is pretty good. I also like to use a shimmery medium-color bronzer like Tarte Mineral Bronzer in Park Ave Princess as a subtle golden highlight.

Favorite Blush -- I loveeee the BareMinerals Ready Blushes! First off, they're not the most pigmented blushes out there. But for someone who has a heavy hand like me no matter how hard I try to be gentle, these blushes are great because they go on sheer and you can build the color if you wish. However, I mainly love them because they have mineral ingredients and aren't full of parabens and other nasty chemicals. For me, there's nothing worse than putting on a product that's going to sit on my face the whole day and have the feeling that it's clogging my pores. I absolutely love BM skin products because they feel so light on your skin and have never once broken me out (yet). I hope BM comes out with more blush colors in the future, but for now they have most of the traditional blush colors available. My favorite would have to the be The Aphrodisiac, which is similar in color to the NARS Orgasm. It adds a really nice refreshing glow to my face, both in the summer and winter.

Favorite Bronzer -- Tarte Mineral Bronzer in Park Ave Princess. Apparently there are two formulations to this product? I like the shimmery one because it adds a super pretty glow without being too obnoxious. To be honest, I sometimes even use this as a highlighter or swipe some under my blush since it's close to my skin tone (a shade or two lighter). It adds the most beautiful glow on my skin and it looks I'm so relaxed and well rested. After a late night of studying, that's exaaactly what the doctor ordered!!

Favorite Lipgloss -- I was dreading this category because lipglosses are my favorite. Ahh, but if I HAD to pick one, I'd choose the Benefit Ultra Plush Lipglosses. As a heads up, these lipglosses aren't very pigmented at all. BUTT these are the most hydrating lip glosses ever, which is exactly my cup of tea since I have super dry, scaly, chapped lips 90% of the time. I normally pair these glosses with a heavier eye look or if I'm going for a more natural look. They're also excellent for swiping on or throwing in my bag on rushed mornings since they're one of those products you can put on without looking in the mirror. And it doesn't hurt that they smell and taste like peaches. My favorite colors would have to be Hoola, Coralista, and Bella Bamba.

Favorite Lipstick -- I'm not the biggest lipstick fan to be honest since most of them dry my poor chapped lips out. I do like the L'oreal Colour Riche Lipsticks however, especially the shade Spiced Cider. They're more moisturizing than other lipsticks I've tried and come in a wide range of colors. The packaging is also veeerryy attractive...

Favorite Lip Balm -- For uncolored lipbalm, I love love love the Nivea Kiss of Olive Oil and Lemon balm. In general, most of Nivea's non-tinted lip balms are very hydrating, but I like this one in particular because it has a light, refreshing smell. Trust me, I've tried nearly every lip balm out there, and this is hands down the most moisturizing lip balm and is perrrrfect for the winter season. As far as tinted lipbalms go, I'd have to say that the Revlon Lip Butters are my favorite. I never thought a super pigmented product like this could be so hydrating!! They also come in so many shades so it's perfect all year long. I'd say these are my most used products since you can apply these without even looking in the mirror, which is how I usually apply my lip products haha. My favorite colors are Pink Truffle (THE most perfect MLBB shade I have ever tried) and Sugar Frosting.

Favorite Eyeshadow -- Clinique Chubby Stick Shadow Tint for Eyes in Fuller Fudge. While my love for makeup began with eyeshadows, I'm sad to say that I've barely had time to do any type of eye makeup since school began. I usually have a max of 10 minutes to put on my makeup (no matter how early I wake up, this always happens) and most of it goes towards my face makeup, leaving nearly no time to put on eye primer, get out my powder shadows, put a base color, crease color, highlight, etc etc etc etc. Luckily, I have found the most perfect eyeshadow product for superduper rushed, busy girls like me! These chubby eye pencils don't require primer, come in many shades, take a max of 30 seconds to swipe across the lid, and last the ENTIRE day. Yes, without any primer. On my oily lids. Fuller Fudge is my favorite because it's a sparkly bronze so its a neutral yet brightening shade for medium-toned girls like me. And if I have more time, I can put another shade in my crease to create a quick smokey look.  I love these sticks sooo much that I will probabbblyy end up getting all the colors by the end of medical school...just sayin'!

Favorite Eyeliner -- Nyx Retractable Eyeliner in Deep Purple. Their Jumbo Eye Pencils also make good eyeliners.

Favorite Mascara -- So hard to choose! CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume (orange packaging) gives the best volume though. It has a really nice, fat brush and clumps very little.

Favorite Face Brush -- I've been really loving my ELF Bronzing Brush for blush application. It's angled and does a nice job of targeting the area I want to concentrate my blush.

Favorite Eye Brush -- Don't really have one in particular, but I've fallen in love with the ELF eye Brushes! I've bought probably all of them this year and all of them are great quality brushes for only $1! Haven't had an issue at all with bristles falling out, application, etc.

Favorite Nail Polish -- I've been really impressed by the CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Glosses this year. I love the brush! It applies color so smoothly and evenly. Much better than the higher nailpolish brands. The polishes apply very opaque and I only need two coats. Better yet, I don't even need a topcoat afterwards and the polish doesn't chip for a good 3-4 days (that's wayyyy long for me...my nailcolor usually chips in 2 days even with OPI or Essie). I'm hoping this is part of the permanent collection because I will definitely be buying more shades this upcoming season! Colorwise though, my favorite nail shade has been Sally Hansen Cinna-Snap.

Favorite Perfume -- Not really a perfume, but I discovered PINK Fresh & Clean Body Spray this year after looking for a light, refreshing smell to wear around the wards since we're not really allowed to wear heavy perfumes. Omg...this spray is so so so so soooo good! It's a perfect blend of fruity and floral, and makes me smell so fresh in the morning! I will say that the smell doesn't linger more than 1-2 hours, which is the only downside. However, I'll probably still continue buying this body spray because it is such a light, but noticeable scent and feels so clean and refreshing in the morning.

Favorite Drug Store Brand -- Revlon Revlon Revlon! No competition at all, I've absolutely loved all of their recent products this year. Their lip butters, lip stains, lip balm stains, mascara, creamy eye shadows have ALL been amazing. Plus, they've released some new products I cannot wait to try this spring (umm hello, scented nailpolish!?!?! matte lip balms?!!? glossy lip balms?!) Their products are just so amazing for the drugstore in terms of quality, longevity, innovation, and color selection.

Favorite High End Brand -- This is nearly impossible to pick because I like different brands for different things. I've probably been most interested in Tarte though because (of course) of their absolutely adorable packaging, natural ingredients, color range, and quality. I recently purchased one of their holiday gift sets and I'm hooked on their blushes, cheek tints, and lip products. And then of course are their infamous lip tints and lip stains....Be prepared, wallet!!

My story
